Pictured are the remains of the house of Flora Macdonald in South Uist.
Moore County in North Carolina was famous during the Battle of Moore’s Creek. The battle occurred between the British and American Armies. It was a minor battle fought early in the war, near Wilmington on February 27, 1776.
According to the pension record of Donald MacDonald, it drew a crowd of interested persons. However, many Scottish residents did not welcome the victory of the Americans. These were the families from the Clan of Flora Macdonald who came to America before the war to avoid further persecution and punishment for their part in the hiding of the Stuart pretender to the throne. Upon arrival, they dispatched a petition from onboard their ship to the governor of North Carolina for a land grant of some 40,000 acres.
One might conclude that the Scots were clearly defined as Tory sympathizers. After the war, the clan was forced to return to Scotland to avoid being hanged as traitors!
The Scots, nonetheless, were known throughout colonial America to sympathize with the British.
For those persons with Scottish ancestors from Moore County, one location to further trace this family is South Uist where Florida settled in 1779 among her clan in 1779.
