How to Find Your Ancestor in Virginia: Names Listed in Wills and Estates
Search for family names to know where they were at any given year
If your relatives lived in Virginia, you would want to scan this list of names!
Finding where the families resided can be tedious. I use the county wills and estates to discover where my family was for different periods. It is wise to search your names in the old wills and estates and read the documents! The reason is that we have aunts, uncles, and cousins that are attached to great-grandfathers. I always use this system, taking time to discern how the relationships connect. Because families were ever “on the move” on the American frontier. I search “all counties” in any given state. For example, the large Augusta County, Virginia, was separated into smaller counties four times!
