The Golden Hind was displayed in Deptford, London, for almost 70 years before she was broken up. The replica was built in Appledore, Torridge, using traditional skills, and she has spent most of her life being on show to the public. Like the original ship, she has also circumnavigated the globe.
The time of Sir Francis Drake’s birth was fixed at 1545; however, from genealogical and other investigations, it appears that he was born as early as 1537 in Tavistock, Devon, England, and died January 27, 1596, in Portobelo, Colon, Panama. He was an English explorer and privateer known for circumnavigating the world in a single expedition between 1577 and 1580.
Genealogists and historians are interested in knowing the names of passengers aboard The Golden Hind, which was bound for America from 1577 to 1580.
Sir Francis Drake set sail from Plymouth, England, on November 15, 1577, and returned to the same port on September 26, 1580.
So, where did Sir Francis Drake land in America? You might be interested that The Golden Hind was anchored just north of San Francisco. Drake claimed the territory for Queen Elizabeth I, referring to the land as “Nova Albion.” He remained on this coast for one month to make ship repairs in preparation for crossing the Pacific Ocean.
What are the names of the passengers on this long, extended voyage?
This article intends to provide a link to a complete list of the persons who sailed with Sir Francis Drake worldwide. These people were the first Englishmen to land in North America. Many of those embarked on the voyage, yet it is uncertain if all names in this list continued on the voyage that the Captain returned. The record of the vessel Winter was lost with Capt. Thomas.
The following is the last entry and authentic journal preserved of that voyage. It is entitled “The World Encompassed by Sir Francis Drake” and was printed in a small quarto volume, with the imprint “London, Printed for Nicholas Bourne, and will be sold at his shop at the Royall Exchange, 1628.”
