Rare Marriage Records Online
While researching records, factor in spelling errors
Finding vital records, such as births, deaths, and marriages, can be a real problem for genealogists. It certainly has for me! Thus, I copied records whenever I could find them, primarily marriages.
The issue with finding marriages is that records were kept by the minister who performed the ceremony in the past, and it was not required by law (in most states) to be recorded at the local courthouse. Sometimes, they were published in newspapers, but this can be tricky. For example, a single newspaper could cover a broad spectrum in Georgia. An example is The Macon Telegraph, the primary news source for Middle Georgia. It was founded in Macon, Georgia, in 1826 and became daily in 1860. During the Civil War, it was published as The Macon Daily Telegraph. The Macon Telegraph had several more name changes. This newspaper is an excellent source for the genealogist, as it features obituaries, marriages, and local news. Sometimes, you read some gossip.
The South Carolina Gazette, published between 1732 and 1775, is an invaluable resource for finding marriages during that period.
You can find the above newspapers (printed) or (microfilmed) at most genealogy libraries.
Because so few early marriage records are in South Carolina county records, the most significant was the discovery of South Carolina Marriage Settlements 1775-1819 considering the bulk of personal issues that are included. Another excellent source is the National Intelligencer. I found the index for this publication and added it to Georgia Pioneers. For members of Georgia Pioneers, here is the link to the index
Content: Indexes to Births, Deaths, Marriages in the National Intelligencer, Washington, D. C. 1800 to 1834.
Note: This newspaper published items from the Eastern States, making it worthwhile for genealogical use. It was published by the National Genealogical Society Library, Washington, D. C., where several publications may be found.
